Artist text : Youn Hye Sung 윤혜성
In painting, shadows form a discrete component of the image, bringing realism and perspective to the subject. But in Youn Hye Sung’s painting, the subject is the shadow itself. And if light on the canvas exists through the presence of shadow, the latter leaves the idea of the object under the light by the subjectivity of its lines, without needing to be represented.
The work of Youn Hye Sung is delicate and warm, a sensitive and pictorial poetry. The artist disregards the object to keep only the form that it leaves under the light.
The colors carefully chosen by the artist, let emanate from the canvases a warm and enveloping atmosphere. Like negatives of photographs that the artist would have superimposed, the shadows seem to intermingle, frozen one by one through the hours that pass, the traces of time. This reappropriation of reality suggests to the viewer moments passed through the filter of the intimate. Because the work of Youn Hye Sung is above all an observational work, and her painting is a reality beyond the visible. Thus, the paintings of the artists are to be looked at not with the eyes but with the imagination.
