Solo-curated exhibition — Odile Ouizeman Gallery, Paris — May 2022Bringing together four Korean artists based in Paris, Another Scene of Korea examined how a new generation is moving beyond the legacies of Korean Minimalism and Dansaekhwa to develop diverse contemporary practices. Through works by Joowon Jo, Jihee Han, Hyeoki Kwon and Seunghwan Lee, the exhibition explored the relationship between the tangible and the immaterial, the visible and the impenetrable, and humanity’s changing connection with nature.
The artists
Jihee Han
Born in South Korea in 1985, Jihee Han earned a Master’s degree in Arts and Living Images from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University in 2016. Her meditative paintings explore silent landscapes poised between calm and chaos, abstraction and realism. Moving from glaciers and rocks to water and sky, she approaches nature not as a representation of reality, but as a self-contained spiritual world.
Joowon Jo
Born in 1983 in Anyang, South Korea, Joowon Jo moved to France in 2011. He graduated from the École supérieure d’art et de design TALM–Angers and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. He currently lives and works in Paris.Combining ink painting with 3D modelling, Joowon Jo creates imaginary paths that connect Korean traditions with contemporary digital practices.
Seunghwan Lee
Born in Seoul in 1989, Seunghwan Lee moved to France in 2009 and pursued doctoral studies in Visual Arts, Aesthetics and Art Sciences at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Bringing art and science together, his practice uses mathematical models derived from observations of the natural world to create organic forms that appear spontaneous, yet are precisely calculated and structured.
Hyeoki Kwon
Born in 1984, Hyeoki Kwon explores the human condition and our place within the natural environment. Through physical experimentation, he seeks to establish a reciprocal dialogue with nature, using water as both a material and a spiritual symbol. Its fluidity and changing states allow him to question human limitations and evoke an instinctive connection to nature often obscured by modern life.
